2018 LRNC Call for Papers

11th Annual Legal Research Network Conference

Legal Developments in Europe and the Future of European Rule of Law

Göttingen, 4-7 September 2018

Call for Papers

The Law Faculties of the Universities of Bristol, Budapest (ELTE), Ghent, Göttingen, Groningen, Lille – Nord de France, Turku and Uppsala cordially invite junior and senior researchers to participate in the 11th Annual Legal Research Network Conference on 4-7 September 2018. The conference will be hosted by the Law Faculty of the University of Göttingen.

Aim of the Legal Research Network Conferences
The LRN conference offers a common space for both senior and junior scholars to present and discuss their research in a stimulating international environment, which transcends the traditional boundaries of the legal sub-disciplines.

2018 Conference Theme
The rule of law is a founding principle stemming from the common constitutional traditions of European States and a fundamental value upon which the European Union is based. However, current domestic developments in various EU Member States show that we are far from consolidated consensus regarding the principles substance or even its value. The current worries about the erosion of the rule of law in Europe take place at a time when respect and promotion of the rule of law at the international level seem to gain in importance. What do current legal developments in European States or European institutions imply for the future of the rule of law? This complex question may be addressed from different angles and different levels. We encourage the submission of papers concerning – but not limited to – topics as:

  • Conceptualization and legal character of the rule of law in Europe
  • Compliance with judgements of the European Court of Human Rights
  • Foundations and limits of rule of law in EU law
  • Structure and actions of European institutions in light of the rule of law
  • Interplay between national developments and the European rule of law
  • Domestic constitutional developments in European States concerning the rule of law
  • Promotion of the European rule of law

Submission and deadlines
We encourage researchers wishing to participate to submit a topic for presentation to Dr. iur. Till Patrik Holterhus, MLE., LL.M. (Yale) [tholter@jura.uni-goettingen.de] until 15 June 2018, and submit a corresponding paper abstract until 15 July 2018 (400 words max.). Questions regarding the conference and the Call for Papers may be directed to Lennart Wegener, MLE. [lennart.wegener@jura.uni-goettingen.de].
